Silica Standard

Important Update: Effective Immediately

Does The New Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) on Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) Apply To Me?

Do you engage in high-exposure trigger tasks? (cutting, grinding, polishing, clean up, etc.)

Do you work with or around artificial stone and natural stone containing more than 10% crystalline silica?

If you answered yes to either of the above, the below ETS applies to you.

The Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board have approved Cal/OSHA’s Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) on Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS).

The ETS modifies the existing RCS General Industry Standard (Section 5204) and adds new requirements for all employers where RCS is present in the workplace

This ETS affects employees working in general industry under California Code of Regulation, Title 8, section 5204.

It includes important revisions to protect workers engaged in high-exposure trigger tasks (cutting, grinding, polishing, clean up, etc.) involving artificial stone and natural stone containing more than 10% crystalline silica.

The ETS goes into effect on December 29, 2023.

Current Silica Updates

A primary goal of these initiatives are to prioritize OSHA inspection activity in workplaces where workers are typically exposed to high levels of silica, and to identify hazards and ensure prompt abatement. All inspections, programmed and unprogrammed, shall cover the hazards associated with exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS or silica).

RISKS OF SILICA EXPOSURE

Respirable crystalline silica is a health concern in various occupational settings and construction sites. The effects are serious and can result in death if proper methods are not followed when working around silica. Our Environmental Health Professionals have been trained to operate personal sampling equipment to monitor employee exposures in these settings.
