Asbestos Found in Children’s Products

Asbestos was found where?!

A recent article, “Asbestos Found in Children’s Makeup Product”, highlighted that this cancer-causing mineral was found in a children’s makeup product. Although the majority of people know that asbestos exposure is dangerous, it continues to be found in numerous commercial products. The article explained that the brand IQ Toys produced the “Princess Girl’s All-in-One Deluxe Makeup Palette.” However, what the lab discovered was shocking. In every gram of eye shadow tested, there were approximately four million asbestos fibers found.

What is Asbestos and Why is it Dangerous?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that is composed of thin, needle-like fibers. Asbestos fibers are so soft and flexible, they are almost of a fluffy consistency. They have been so widely used in the past due to their resistance to heat, electricity and corrosion qualities. These qualities make the mineral useful, yet toxic. Exposure to asbestos can cause several cancers including mesothelioma.

Asbestos exposure is dangerous as their small fibers can remain airborne for days after their initial exposure to the air. Individuals can then breathe these fibers in, lodging them into their lungs and airways. Once lodged into the lung tissue, the fiber can cause severe diseases and cancers, such as mesothelioma.
